In a inauguration day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious beginning to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, now stands as the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A moment like this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hands are upon the controls for transformation,” Mamdani added.

Rejecting counsel to lower expectations, the mayor declared: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will lead with courage and vision.”

Steering by Democratic Socialist Principles

Mamdani openly embraced his socialist politics. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to rapturous applause.

The inauguration was a two-part event, starting with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• Free buses
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The estimated $10 billion cost of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to finance. Mamdani has pledged to increase levies for the richest residents and big business. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating Political Challenges

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past tweets.

Mamdani has moved to smooth over these concerns by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior meeting between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing roadways, and ensuring reliable subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders reported.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky warning about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his speech with a simple statement: “The work has only just begun.”
